i fucking love Rain World

i fucking love this game, i remember the first time i played it, i knew it was a piece of art, i remember when i was asking myself why this game was called rain world, so i asked my friend (who was next to me), and the rain started to fall in that second, i was so fucking scared and lost.

And right in that moment, i understood why it’s called:

the fucking game i love.

this post will be about the things that make me fucking love it and why you should love it too, so let’s start.

what the fuck is “Rain World”?

well, it’s a game indeed, but also a masterpiece.

it’s a precision survival-platformer from 2017, made by a two‑person indie studio Videocult, published by Adult Swim Games and Akupara Games. you play as a “slugcat”, a cat-like creature trying to survive in a brutal, decaying world. everything feels alive thanks to Videocult’s insane creature AI (no ChatGPT bullshit). every single run feels different, unpredictable, raw, rich.

i can’t say much more, they only made this one game but it’s fucking enough:

Joar Jakobsson – programming, graphics, animation
James Primate – music, sound design, level concepts

they started dev in 2011 after a Kickstarter and spent six long years perfecting creature behavior, procedural movement and that haunting soundtrack.

Soundtrack

THE SOUNDTRACK IS FUCKING GENIUS.

James Primate cooked over 3.5 hours of low‑fi/electronic ambient blending field recordings, pipes, metal scraps, eerie synths—sounds like a fucking symphony of junk in an alien world.

favorite tracks:

  • Sundown – menu vibe… when it hits, you feel the rain.
  • The Coast – wide and melancholic, salt spray in audio form.

When predators chase you, threat-tracks layer up dynamically with real rain audio until a pipe-organ, god-like storm crescendo… pure theatre.

PLUS: vinyl release, remastered twice—collectors, it’s fucking insane.

atmosphere & regions

ruined swamp, toxic underground, skyline spires—each regions has its own palette and soundtrack vibe, drip‑by‑drip. pure immersion.

creatures i’m not gonna spoil shit.

fuck formalities, there are two main groups:

lizards

predator AI at its finest: smart, fast, relentless.

scavengers

smart ape-like fuckers with tribes, spears, explosives. they have social memory, reputation, tribes, leaders… treat them well and they become your bodyguard legion; fuck them off and they send kill squads. real dynamic AI.

everything else? fuck you discover it yourself.

AI & scavenger relationships

the AI isn’t just dumb patrol scripts, it’s layers of “Dynamic Relationships” and “Social Memory”:

  • scavengers remember you, fear you, like you, follow you, defend you if you earn it.
  • reddit says:

“They rely on cooperation… you basically have a scavenger bodyguard legion”
and “a scavenger sacrifice itself just to save you” post

they gesture, they trade, they judge, if you show up, crawl past tolls, gift pearls or spears, help them fight, they fucking remember. fuck with them, you’re cooked.

this ain’t scripted, this shit is real-time, ecosystem-level AI, running even off-screen.

story told by the world

no cutscenes, no dialogs. just logs, ruins, eco-collapse vibes. piece it yourself. no spoon-feeding. just raw poetry.

community & mods

fans dropped Downpour DLC (2023) and The Watcher DLC (2025), plus mods and theory threads. best community fr.

here’s why you should play it

  • emergent AI = no two runs are the same
  • soundtrack = texture, emotion, tension
  • world = pixel art heaven soaked in danger
  • scavengers = unpredictable, smart, buddy-or-betrayer
  • lizards = fucking lethal
  • community = very alive, the best community i know.

ok so that’s it

i’m not explaining every fucking detail, i want YOU to play it. because i fucking love Rain World.

and if you don’t get it at first, stick with it—learn its rhythms, feel the rain.

if you get stuck, want tips, or wanna get lost with me in a run, send me an email: me at chewawi dot gay.
